The plot revolves around Richard Bean (Kline), a Broadway star known for his egotism, who experiences a public breakdown and retreats to his hometown. After returning to the family-run theater where he first discovered his talent, he finds his father, the former artistic director, suffering from dementia. The theater, now reduced to a dinner theater serving murder mysteries, is run by his brother (Tenney) and sister-in-law, who is also the town’s mayor. Determined to restore the theater’s former glory, Richard plans to stage a great American classic, with himself as director and star, in an effort to save both the theater and the town.！
